Looking for something new later this year? Then this may be right up your alley!

South of Hell

South of Hell

Actress Mena Suvari is best known for her roles in the films American Pie (Heather) and American Beauty (Angela) and for her appearances on Six Feet Under (Edie) and Chicago Fire (Isabella). Now she’s starring in a new TV series, South of Hell. She plays Maria Abascal, “a demon-hunter-for-hire whose power stems from within.” Literally. She has a demon named Abigail living inside of her. They share a soul. Of course Maria wants to overtake Abigail but that’s not going to be easy.

Suvari said the role was “highly challenging,” as Maria has three personalities: “Maria as her genuine self; Abigail in somewhat vampy psycho-sexual mode; and Abigail in full-on demonic fury.” South of Hell is set in Charleston, South Carolina. It will be aired on WEtv later in the year.

Here’s some info on a new show that should be right up our alley! South of Hell is slated to be an eight-part horror thriller starring Mena Suvari as a demon hunter for hire.

South of Hell

Horror gurus Eli Roth (Hostel) and Jason Blum (Sinister) are exec producing the show, which has been penned by James Manos (The Shield).

Set in South Carolina, the series follows Maria Abascal (Suvari), a demon hunter for hire. Her work, however, means she has her own inner demon in the shape of Abigail, who feeds on the energy of the monsters she pursues.

The drama is for WE tv, the US cable channel that is moving into drama.

Roth directed the first of the eight one-hour episodes and the series will debut on WE tv later this year. US producer and distributor Sonar is selling South of Hell internationally and will be marketing the show in Cannes.

“It is the first pairing of horror masters Eli Roth and Jason Blum and it is a nice blend of genres, with a lot of thriller elements and a lot in there for horror fans,” says Jenna Glazier, Sonar’s senior VP, television.

AMC Networks channel WE tv is has a female skew, and with its strong female lead, South of Hell will appeal to women viewers. However, there is also a strong male character of note in David (Zachary Booth), the demon-hunting brother of Maria. CSI actor Bill Irwin plays the demon slayers’ father.

The series embodies the new form of high-end serialised TV drama, Glazier says. “It has a lot of film pedigree behind it with Mena Suvari, Eli Roth and Jason Blum. It was shot on location in Charleston, and that southern element figures heavily; it is a character in the series.

“South of Hell definitely pushes the envelope with storytelling, and has horror, and moments that are very suspenseful. It is a scary, thrilling and visually stunning series.

She adds: “We’ll have Mena Suvari at MIPTV and she embodies the series.”

It seems that we just can’t get enough of the supernatural world and now WE tv is jumping on the bandwagon with their own original supernatural thriller, “South of Hell”. The series has been given an eight-episode order for a 2015 premiere and comes from two of the top horror producers, Jason Blum and Eli Roth, in their first pairing.

South of Hell

A supernatural thriller set in Savannah, GA, South Of Hell focuses on Maria Abascal, a demon hunter whose power stems from within. The premiere episode will be directed by Roth (Hostel). “As WE tv moves firmly into scripted programming, we are committed to presenting distinctive and engaging stories,” said WE tv President Marc Juris. “That is certainly the case with South Of Hell, a dramatic thriller that introduces viewers to an unforgettable character, supernatural themes and the battle between good and evil.” The premiere episode was written by Matt Lambert. James Manos Jr. (Dexter) is executive producer and showrunner. Blum of Blumhouse Prods (Insidious) also serves as executive producer, along with Gerard Bocaccio, who worked at Blumhouse; Sonar’s former CEO Stewart Till; his replacement, Gene Stein; and Roth.

The synopsis for the show reads:

Charleston, South Carolina is the most possessed city in the world. Evil thrives there. Something with which 30-year-old exorcist Maria Abascal is intimately acquainted. She wrestles demons for a living. Especially Abigail, the one that lives within her. The one who feeds on damned souls and who’s violated the laws of hell to live on earth—and live on, inside Maria. Now, as they work as one, Maria will discover how personal her battle with evil has become and how far Abigail will go to protect them both. It’s a journey where the unspeakable is just a heartbeat away.

WE tv recently announced the cast of “South of Hell,” led by actress Mena Suvari in the dual role of Maria Abascal and her inner demon, Abigail. The cast also includes: Zachary Booth as David Abascal, Maria’s brother; Bill Irwin as Enos Abascal, Maria and David’s father and cult leader; Drew Moerlein as Dusty, Maria’s neighbor; Lamman Rucker as Rev. Elijah Bledsoe, a priest with a strong attraction to Maria,; Paulina Singer as the Reverend’s daughter, Grace; Lydia Hearst as southern belle Charlotte Roberts; Slate Holmgren as the local drug dealer, Sweetmouth; and Lauren Velez as Tetra, a spiritual informant.
