The CW’s “Beauty and the Beast,” a modern-day retelling of the classic fairytale, is getting new characters in its sophomore season who could shake things up.

According to TVLine, the show creators are currently casting the guest-starring role of Zach, an overconfident former soldier who uses a reunion with an old friend to seek vengeance, perhaps against Muirfeld (Lucas Bryant). The new role of Beth is also being cast. Beth is a high school friend of Catherine’s (Kristin Kreuk) who is now a producer at a news station. Beth may use her investigative skills to find out about the beast, which could definitely cause some drama.

Ryan Dechart of “Jane By Design” is also joining the show as Aaron Keller, a relative of Vincent’s (Jay Ryan) who is a shrewd arson investigator who is known for his impetuousness. Aaron comes from a firefighting family, and wants to continue his family’s proud legacy. Dechart will debut in episode four of the new season.

This season will also answer many of the questions from season one. Executive Producer Jennifer Levin told TV Guide at Comic-Con that Catherine will find out who her real father is, and it will inspire her to want to find him.

Viewers will also discover more about Vincent’s past. “Our theme for the year, if we have one, is: Who am I? That would apply for all of our characters,” Levin said.

“A lot of his backstory is going to come through and a lot of that mythology of who Vincent is is going to come out. It’s a lot to chew on for me,” actor Jay Ryan said. “I’m excited for Vincent to have a community outside of the warehouse and just waiting for Catherine and JT to save him.”

“We’re going to see a more super-charged Vincent,” Levin said. “This year we are going to see him be beastier.”

“You’re going to see a more precise beast in season two. His skills are more honed,” Ryan added. “There’s a lot of changes coming up for season two in terms of Vincent’s character.”

“Beauty and the Beast” returns to The CW on October 7.

Stefan Calls Elena
Credit: The CW

Hooray! The first peek at The Vampire Diaries Season 5, Episode 1, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is here! ETOnline has the sneak peek photos, and are they interesting.

Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola) are moving in to the dorms at Whitmore College. Carrying their worldly possessions in hampers (Come on, girls; you’re vampires! You can carry heavier stuff than that!), the vamps look like all the other college freshman: excited and nervous.

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is nowhere to be found — nor is the impersonating Silas, either. But in another set of photos, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) has a visitor from the Other Side:

Bonnie (Kat Graham). The two look pretty close as she looks over his shoulder. He’s likely texting a message from the witch to her besties, explaining why she hasn’t shown up for the first day of classes. Elena and Caroline still have no idea Bonnie is dead and can’t even hold a phone. Ghost world problems.

But wait. In one of the photos, Bonnie is grinning at Elena and Caroline as they haul their stuff. Hm. Did she get special permission to visit from beyond the grave… or is Bonnie back to being alive already? Or maybe she’s just creepily spying on them. (Only Jeremy can see her, after all.)

So, basically, the photos raise more questions than offer answers. Still, it’s nice to see everyone back at school after a long, long summer break!

  • Elena Gilbert’s Senior Quote
Fans of Nina Dobrev‘s acting skills should check out this featurette from The Vampire DiariesSeason 4 DVD set, “The Evolution of Elena Gilbert.”
This 8-minute featurette showcasesElena‘s journey from human to vampire, and features character insights from executive producers Julie Plec and Caroline Dries, as well as observations from Candice Accola and Nina herself!

Julie starts the video off by saying, “The decision to turn Elena into a vampire meant a lot of things. It meant taking your heroine and turning her into a creature that could potentially be evil and it meant taking a human character and turning her into a supernatural character, in addition to the doppelganger, which already exists. So it launched a challenge for Nina Dobrev, which was thrilling to all of us as writers. And equally thrilling, for her, as an actress.” No doubt! We don’t know she keeps all her characters and personalities straight, but we’re impressed.

And what about that traumatic transition? Julie added, “We knew we didn’t want it to be an easy journey for her. I think some of our audience would have loved that. They would have preferred it if day 2 she woke up and life was an endless party and we were having all the fun in the world. But our love for Elena and our protection of her as our heroine; we wanted to show the cautionary tale attached to vampirism. It’s not wish fulfillment, it’s a curse.”

Nina also addresses what it was like to play the new Elena, saying, “As a newbie vampire now, it’s not always fun. Because Elena’s experience as a vampire isn’t fun and games. It heightened all her emotions and her feelings, which were sorrow and despair. As an actress is gives me a lot to do, because I get to do this full range of emotions.”

And we love this insight from Candice: “I love watching Elena, who usually has it so together, finally not have it together. The whole idea of turning her humanity off? I think it’s kind of the most human we’ve seen her. She’s finally getting angry. She’s finally mad, and she’s finally really rebelling against this idea of what she should be feeling.”

Wow. We never thought of it that way! But she’s right … Elena was kind of predictable and concerned with acting like “the good girl” before she became a vamp. And now, all bets are off. Humanity or not, we like vampire Elena! Especially when she’s heating up the screen with Damon.

Bring on Season 5! The hot “Delena” action cannot get here soon enough.

Vampire Diaries Season 5 Promo Still
Vampire Diaries Season 5 Promo Still

Late last night, the internet delivered something wonderful: The first The Vampire DiariesSeason 5 promo video. Thirty seconds of Stefan(Paul Wesley) or SilasElena (Nina Dobrev) andDamon (Ian Somerhalder), and a mortalKatherine (Nina Dobrev). That half-minute flies by all too quickly, but we paused and rewound so we didn’t miss a second. Here’s what to expect based on the sneak peek:

0:01 — Thursday, October 3

Yay! It’s only about a month away now!

0:02 — “Hello, my shadow self.”

Yeah, yeah. We’ve seen this before.

0:03 – 0:06 — Silas locks Stefan in a safe, throws him in the quarry.

Sigh. We feel bad for Stefan and all, but six seconds of the promo is old footage? No fair.

0:07 — Shirtless kissing?

Oh, hello, sexytime.

0:08 – 0:09 — An exchange of “I love you”s.

Aw, Team Elena fans: Look how happy she is!

0:10 — “New surprises”

Is it a pony?!

0:11 — Nope, just Katherine.

And her hair is full of secrets.

0:12 — Damon looks truly disgusted.

Someone’s not happy to see his (human) ex.

0:13 – 0:14 — Jeremy gets in a fight.

Starting the school year off right. Shouldn’t these kids know better than to provoke the living dead?

0:15 – 0:16 — Stefan or Silas hits on Katherine while she’s in the bathtub.

It has to be Silas, right? The Katlas ‘shipping has begun. (Kidding. Mostly.)

0:17 — Katherine leans forward…

Is she going in for a kiss?!

0:18 – 0:20 “This season, the rules have changed.”

We’re gonna have to learn all new rules, people.

0:21 – 0:22 — Car, meet pole.

Yeah, we have no idea who was driving or if we should be worried about them.

0:23 — Damon can’t spell doppelganger.

We don’t blame him. Hint: It’s “e” before “l.” Also, does that mean Silas’s secret is out?

0:24 – 0:30 — It’s over.
