SUPERNATURAL
A potential Supernatural spin-off has an official location – Chicago.

At the San Diego Comic-Con Supernatural executive producer Robert Singer made a passing comment about a possible spin-off that was in the works for the hit CW show. However, Singer was skimpy of the details, only revealing that it would be in a more urban setting.
Now Singer and co-executive producer Jeremy Carver have opened up about the new program that is set to have a backdoor pilot in episode 20 of Supernatural’s ninth season.

“It’s going to be quite a departure – the same world but from a whole new perspective,” Carver told Entertainment Weekly.

The duo had previously announced that Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) would be making an occasional appearance in the spin-off but otherwise viewers will be introduced to a new set of cast members.

“Most spin-offs, you spin characters out and create a show about them. Jared and Jensen will be in the spin-off, but it’s an entirely different cast of characters,” Singer said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “And unlike Supernatural – which is a road show – this will take place in one place with a wider cast of characters.”

Set in Chicago, the program will still focus on the hunter/monster dynamic, but it will include a wider variety of characters and allow monsters to play a larger role, a la Benny Lafitte (Ty Olsson).

“We’ll have main characters who are both human and monsters,” Carver told Entertainment Weekly.

This includes the hunters and the monsters families, something that Supernatural doesn’t see to often since their hunters are often devoid of a large family group.

MishaOne of the reasons that “Supernatural” has become such an interesting part of TV history is that they’ve managed to do so much with what has ultimately managed to be so little, at least when you think about quantity. (No, we’re not trying to slam anyone; calm down internet.) What we’re talking about here is that while most shows have four or five series regulars who go the distance, “Supernatural” really has two. Yes, Misha Collins does occasionally get the promotion, but Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are the anchors. Without them, you don’t even have a show to talk about.

So what makes the potential “Supernatural” spin-off in some ways different from the flagship show is that there will be a larger crop of characters featured and more of an ensemble feel. However, this is not a show that will star someone like Collins, Jim Beaver, Felicia Day, or anyone else in the leading role. As Robert Singer explains to Entertainment Weekly, this series will be introduced as a new universe by our characters on “Supernatural,” but transition into something new:
“Most spin-offs, you spin characters out and create a show about them. Jared and Jensen will be in the spin-off, but it’s an entirely different cast of characters … And unlike Supernatural – which is a road show — this will take place in one place with a wider cast of characters.”

While we do think that “Supernatural” would probably have more guaranteed ratings success were they to include Jared or Jensen in the spin-off, at the end of the day, it’s really all about the story that the team feels the most comfortable with. “Supernatural” didn’t need to rely on anything to become a hit, and this spin-off ultimately will not either.
Are you excited to see this “Supernatural” spin-off actually air?
