In an interview with InStyle Magazine, The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder talks about the issues between his character Damon and Elena.

Our favorite vampires are back! After a month-long hiatus, The Vampire Diaries returns tonight to The CW at 9/8c. And while the shocking events of the mid-season finale are still on our brains (RIP Carol Lockwood), the real question remains: will Damon and Elena be able to conquer the sire bond and be together? “I think there are more trials ahead for Damon and Elena (Nina Dobrev),” Ian Somerhalder told InStyle.com after his charity, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, won the Mozilla Firefox Challenge by raising more than $120,000 for his environmental empowerment initiative. “It’s such a star-crossed lovers game at this point,” he continued about his on-screen (andoff-screen) romance. “Their relationship is such a push and pull, but it’s so deep-rooted in the fabric of who they are. Poor Damon, poor Elena as well, they go through the ringer. They really do.” And fans shouldn’t expect Elena to make a final decision any time soon. “This is going to go on for quite some time,” Ian teased.
