The Vampire Diaries loves its origin myths, and we got another one in Season 4, Episode 6, “We All Go a Little Mad Sometimes.” This time, it was about Silas, an ancient and very powerful witch.

The mysterious Professor Atticus Shane (David Alpay) — finally, we got a first name! — gave a surprisingly well-attended lecture at Mystic Falls High School. Proudly showing off an ancient rock, Atticus (we’ll never tire of that name) launched into a tale about where it came from — a witch’s tombstone. “A witch so powerful that Silas — that was his name — created a spell that would grant him immortality,” says the prof.

But Silas couldn’t do it alone and enlisted a she-witch named Qetsiyah to help, capitalizing on the fact that she had a thing for him. “Sadly for Qetsiyah, Silas wanted to give immortality to another woman. So Qetsiyah killed her and buried Silas alive, leaving him powerless, immortal, and alone,” Shane continues. “This might actually be the origin story of hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” It probably has more to do with the fact that she’s a witch than that she’s a woman, Prof.

“It’s said that Silas wants to rise again, regain his power, wreak havoc on the world. Maybe we should be afraid,” Atticus warns his audience. “Or maybe it’s all a bunch of crap, and this is just an old rock.”

We’re guessing the former. This is Mystic Falls, after all. There has been speculations swirling that Atticus Shane himself is Silas. Maybe that’s what the teacher wants from Bonnie (Kat Graham) — her power.
