Episode 5 recap
Well the title of this episode says it all “The Killer” but who exactly is doing the killing. This episode shows elements of the Vampire Diaries that we have been missing like Elena and Stefan writing in there diaries, could this mean the couple are drifting apart, and not confiding in each other.
We picked up with Connor’s conversation with Professor Shane and learned that the Prof had promised to give Connor answers about his hunter’s mark once the tattoo was complete. That’s why he sent Connor to Mystic Falls — so he could kill enough vampires and hurry it along. The Prof asked Connor that he not hurt the witch who’s caught up in this mess (oh, we remember you, Bonnie!) because she’s important to what he has planned. Connor would make no promises, so the professor said he’d occupy Bonnie himself. He sent Connor on his way — which was to the Grill with werewolf venom extracted from that hybrid he’d decapitated to escape Klaus, along with stakes and a knife that he promptly put to Jeremy’s throat.
At home, Elena woke up to journal. “Dear diary, I know it’s been a while. A long while. I haven’t needed, I haven’t wanted to write this stuff down. But I don’t want to say it out loud either. The thing is, I’m a vampire. And I hate it.” But then we flash across town where Stefan is scribbling too. Only he’s journaling about Elena, his feelings for Elena, and how he will do whatever it takes to find a cure for, you guessed it, Elena. “No matter what lies I have to tell or secrets I have to keep. I’ll do it,” he vows.
Klaus’ calls with Stefan to inform him that Connor had escaped and had werewolf venom — which was a problem since Klaus, the only known antidote, was in Italy digging up Alexander the Hot to rob his corpse of his sword. That’s new information, at least to Stefan, who Klaus tasked with capturing Connor alive and keeping Damon from killing him.
Damon heads to Elena’s house. When he doesn’t find Stefan there, he borrows Elena’s phone to call. The fact that Stefan doesn’t pick up for her either raises red flags. What is he up to?
Back at the Grill, Jeremy, Matt, and April ask Connor why he has taken them hostage. Jeremy and Matt even try to convince him to let April go because she’s not involved in any of it. The hunter looks at them incredulously; he tells them that April and her father is central to all the vampire mess. But when April says she’s never met him before and Jeremy gives him a what-you-talkin’-bout-Willis look, the hunter realizes he’s working with erased minds. “You kids need to get some vervain,” he says. “And don’t just wear it as a bracelet where anybody can just take it off.” Jeremy isn’t pleased at all that his mind has been compelled again. “Every vampire that comes for you is another vampire that I get to kill.” As Connor send text message to Tyler, Caroline and the Salvatore Brothers.
Minutes after they receive their texts, the gang rallies to plot a rescue. Sheriff Forbes evacuates downtown Mystic Falls and closes it off to incoming traffic, claiming a gas leak. Damon wants to go commando immediately. “We have a plan,” he declares. “The plan is that I’m going to rip Connor’s heart out, and then I’m going to feed it to him.” Damon asked Caroline to get “the wicked witch of the west” to come out of retirement. Stefan told them they weren’t all going. Stefan explained that they have to figure out what they’re walking into since Connor is known for setting traps and having werewolf venom.
Caroline couldn’t reach Bonnie because Professor Shane had her turn off her cell phone during her witch therapy session. That started with him making self-deprecating jokes about the books he’s written, making her tea, and then making her take off her earring with hypnosis. Hypnosis, he says, is how he’ll make her confront her fear and guilt of practicing magic again and “remove it.” Note to self: If I ever undergo hypnosis, have someone I trust in the room to make sure I’m not being told to do anything I don’t want to do.
While Stefan was busy phoning Klaus and asking him to get his hybrids onboard with his plan, Damon found Alaric’s map of the tunnels that conveniently provide an entrance to the Grill. (Isn’t it great that even after death Alaric is still helping the gang), Since Connor doesn’t know she’s a vampire yet, Elena wanted to offer to trade herself for the hostages. Damon rightfully thought that was a stupid idea (at least for now) because she’s not ready to go up against the Hunter. A mock fight ensued that ended with Elena straddling Damon on the bed. She said Jeremy was the only thing holding her together, and he promised they’d get him out.
Stefan tells Damon that Klaus is sending a hybrid to go through the front door. Damon’s not having it. “Screw your plan, I’ll kill Connor myself,” he says. Then he starts cocky-walking to the door. (He’s so cute when he does that.) To keep his big bro from going wild, Stefan darts him in the back with vervain, then lays him out on the couch, leaving Elena to stare open-mouth confused. “Why are you doing this?” she asks. Stefan tells her that Damon is reckless and will not care if Matt or April gets hurt. Elena counters by insisting that she go to fight for her brother, Stefan basically tells her that she’s not ready to handle the guilt that comes with killing a human. He promises to protect Jeremy, kisses her, and then heads to the Grill.
At Lockwood Mansion, Caroline finally met Hayley and found out she’d been crashing with “Ty.” Tyler was trying to convince hybrid Dean that he didn’t have to follow Klaus’ orders to capture Connor with non-lethal force. Tyler called Klaus, who threatened to tell Caroline the secret about his little friend Hayley in Appalachia, so Tyler backed down. “What did you say; I’m not your little bitch anymore”. Didn’t Tyler realize that Caroline’s vampire hearing would have picked up Klaus’ voice? We saw the crushed look on her face.
Stefan called the Grill and told Connor that if he released the hostages, they could have a talk, and he would tell Connor about the Five and why Klaus wants him alive. Connor just slammed down the phone. Klaus’s minion Dean tries to sneak in the front door just as Connor finishes lecturing Jeremy on the ways of the hunter world. Dean trips one of Connor’s bombs and gets a body-full of werewolf shrapnel. It doesn’t kill him. But the buckshot Connor uses to hollow out his chest cavity does. Stefan makes it thru the tunnel and able to burrow Matt and April out, sending them off with his phone as a map.
Damon wakes up from his Vervain coma, and wants to go to the Grill, but Stefan has taken his day ring. Damon told Elena to use the fact that Connor doesn’t know she’s a vampire to get as close as she could before making her move. She vamps over to the Grill and barges inside. “Please don’t hurt him,” she begs. “He is the only family that I have left.”
He tells Stefan that he will kill Jeremy in front of Elena. He starts to count. Before he gets to three, Stefan moves. Connor fires and Elena attacks. Jeremy takes a bullet in the stomach and starts to fall, releasing the trigger for the bomb. Right before it goes off; Stefan grabs Jeremy and lifts a table in front of them. Meanwhile, Elena tries to beat the snot out of Connor. But the hunter puts up a good fight. He knocks her off and tries to stake her. Before he does, Stefan grabs him and takes off out of the restaurant. Leaving shocked Elena.
After Elena fed Jeremy her blood to save him, he told Elena about Connor’s tattoo and that someone had compelled him to forget the day he’d spent with Connor. Stefan took Connor through the tunnels and ran into Damon, who said he had to punch through a boiler room basement and septic tank to get there. Luckily, his face only had one smudge of dirt on it Damon was determined to kill Connor, so Stefan told Connor to run as fast as he could. Damon then focused his anger on Stefan and grabbed his brother’s heart — gross. He was going to rip it out if Stefan didn’t tell him why he was protecting Connor. Stefan finally told him, and the way Damon’s face softened — “Klaus told you there’s a cure for vampirism?” — was so great. You could see him processing it. He wants her to be like him, but he wants her to be who she wants to be more. He lets Stefan go.
Connor rounds a corner and runs right into Elena. She bites a chunk out of his neck. “Stay the hell away from my brother,” she says. The hunter falls to his knees. As he recovers, he pulls a stake from his boot and stabs it into our girl — just to the left of her heart. “You missed,” she growls. Then Elena breaks Connor’s neck. Just when we were starting to like him, the hunter dies with his eyes open.
Back at the college, Bonnie had spent seven hours with Professor Shane, though she hadn’t realized it. He told her she didn’t have to be afraid of the spirits or anyone because she has a power of her own that she hasn’t even approached yet — and she’s stronger than them. He told her to close her eyes, say she didn’t have to be afraid and mean it, and she’d be able to light the candle on his desk. She said it, but the candle didn’t light. However, every other candle in his office did. Beautiful image, but I don’t understand how his hypnosis works. Is he able to throw her thoughts in whatever direction he wants without speaking?
Next we saw Elena, she was digging a grave to bury Connor in the woods. She hadn’t taken the time to wipe her bloody mouth. That always puzzles me. She sobbed when Stefan and Damon showed up. She’s pissed: Stefan said he’d protect Jeremy and save her from killing Connor, and he hadn’t. Damon had told her to kill Connor, and she had. Now she’s overwhelmed because she killed someone.
Back at Tyler’s, Caroline walked in on Tyler comforting Hayley over the loss of Dean and freaked out on him. Tyler isn’t the douche we thought he was! He told Caroline he’d rather have Klaus think he boned Hayley than know the truth, which is that he and Hayley want to help other hybrids break their sire bond. If Klaus finds that out, he’ll kill them all. Ah, so is Caroline going to pretend she’s broken up with Tyler and flirt with Klaus to keep him distracted?
Downtown Mystic Falls, Jeremy reunites with Matt and April. He sighs disappointedly when he realizes that Caroline has compelled the truth of what happened that morning out of the new girl’s mind. Before she leaves, he gives April his vervain bracelet. (Basically Matt and Jeremy compelled April with their good looks and charm to put the bracelet on)
“Are you ok?” Matt asks Jeremy as they walk away from April. “Yeah, I’m just sick of all the secrets,” Jeremy replies. Then he feels a twinge on his arm. Jeremy looks down to see the mark of The Five inking up the back of his hand.
At Salvatore Mansion, Stefan moped around in a white tank (thank you!), because Elena won’t speak to him other than to say she wants to be alone. Damon and Stefan agreed not to tell Elena that she killed her (alleged) chance at becoming human again. Stefan’s new plan is to hope Klaus, who found the sword, doesn’t kill him for losing Connor and a hybrid, and then search for another hunter. (So each of the Five must have passed along his mark?) Damon said he’d help, but he wanted to know one thing: Does Stefan want to cure Elena because she’s a vampire and she’s not cut out to be, or because he can’t love her if she’s a vampire? Stefan said he’ll always love her, so it’s because she’s not supposed to be a vampire. Damon said he wanted to make one thing clear: He’s fine with her either way, so if he’s doing this, he’s doing it for Stefan. That was probably my favorite scene of the episode, having the brothers on the same team and also Damon calling Stefan on his feeling for Elena.
Back at the Gilbert house, Elena tries to shower the proverbial blood off her hands. But she can’t. She tries to journal her guilt away. But that doesn’t work either. In fact it worsens. Suddenly blood starts dripping from the ceiling and a bloody trail appears on the floor. Elena follows the stains into the bathroom only to find the room covered with the red stuff and world “killer” scrawled on the mirror in blood. She slips and falls in one of the pools of blood. Blinks. When she stands up the room is clean. And, thus, the madness begins.
Next episode sneak peeks shows Elena having hallucinations, and a return my a favourite vampire Katherine, But is that real or fake?
Thanks one again, Kel for a great recap! Looking forward to next weeks!!
