It’s time to get Garthed again. Supernatural introduced a new hunter in season 7 in DJ Qualls’ Garth Fitzgerald IV, and he’s certainly a quirky figure. Somehow he’s managed to stay alive, despite working with the Winchesters twice already. Will that continue to be true in season 8?
SPN Season 8 Spoilers
According to Pop Culture Zoo, DJ Qualls revealed at the TCA Summer Press Tour that he’ll be returning to the CW drama to reprise his role as Garth in season 8: “I’ll go back…in a couple of weeks. It’s one of my favorite shows to moonlight on. Jared Padalecki is a really good buddy of mine and also they wrote the part for me.” He also responded to a tweet asking if it’s true he’s returning with “Yes, I am.” That means there’s likely another light-hearted episode coming up. This is especially good news because his interactions with the brothers have been pretty amusing thus far, and that’s likely to continue. Sometimes this show needs a good laugh.
No one would even try to say that Garth is among the best hunters on the series, and both times he’s hunted with Sam and Dean, he’s ended up unconscious during the ending fight with the monster-of-the-week. He did suggest that Bobby wasn’t as gone as they thought he was, and he’s obviously not completely incompetent; he’s stayed alive so far. Will that change with his return in Supernatural season 8? Sam and Dean don’t have many people left in their lives, and it is always entertaining to see them return to people in their lives like they will be with Garth. What will be the case that he gets involved in this time? Will it be another light-hearted one, or will Garth find himself involved in what Sam and Dean are after this season, which Jeremy Carver talked about in the Comic-Con press room (video interview here)?
Hopefully Garth is just the first returning character in the upcoming season. It would be nice to see Felicia Day return as Charlie, and it’s always good to see Kim Rhodes return as Sheriff Mills. Sam and Dean don’t have many people they can turn to anymore, so hopefully if anyone does return, they survive their time working with the
