Whilst other cast members have been busy doing Conventions over the filming break, Kat Graham has been busy continuing to work on her career. She premiered her very first single “Put Your Graffiti On Me” a few months back, and is now being featured in the new show AwesomenessTV. “Road To…” is a behind the scenes YouTube experience for fans to see what tour life is currently like for Graham when it comes to her journey into the music industry.

“My style is a little crazy,” Kat admits to Ology. “I’ve always trying to like—I think I’m toning it down, but then I always wind up just kind of doing my own thing. My biggest style inspirations come from the 90s. I’m really inspired by TLC and I’m inspired by Janet Jackson and different designers like Jeremy Scott. I’m inspired by the drag queen scene, by the combat boots, the torn up jeans and baggy skirts. I love that look. I guess that’s kind of where I lie in terms of my own personal style.”

Kat’s fierce attitude certainly doesn’t go unnoticed when she takes the stage. Neither do her outfits that clearly show her creativity. “I love Kanye West and I’m really inspired by him a lot,” she adds. “He does something with men’s fashion, which rappers have done. Very few, like Pharrell, he’s done a lot. And MIA is huge too. People US Weekly just puts on their Fashion Police, but like not always on their cover.”

Filming for season four of TVD is underway and singing has become a huge priority in Kat’s life. But what else is she passionate about? She loves animals, art and spirituality. “I’m passionate about animals. I could be a bit obsessive about art and artists. Like Renaissance artists, most particularly Leonardo da Vinci and the history of things; the background of them and the story behind it. I’m very passionate about the Renaissance era.”

“We have kind of created an army, where we get to see the same fans over and over again,” the 23-year-old says. “I get to know them — where they’re from, who they are. We really make a connection. It’s very much a family.”

And it’s one she says is especially close to her.

“I feel like this is my show — not a production company putting it together,” Graham said in a conference call on Friday.

One thing that the singer/actress doesn’t reveal in her videos, which are each a few minutes long: the pain and toil stemming from her music career.

“I have had, I don’t want to say an extremely negative experience in the music industry, but it has definitely been a grind,” said Graham, who has nearly 500,000 followers on Twitter. “It’s very grimy. I wouldn’t say it’s been a pretty process. It’s left me crying on the carpet, in a dirty apartment, with no money. But it’s been worth it.”

Graham’s 2012 record, Against the Wall, boasts a pop/hip-hop sound with strong beats and has a single, “Put Your Graffiti On Me.” The Pictures of You LP came out in 2007, and she had a single in 2010, “I Want It All.” Before joining the cast of Vampire Diaries in 2009, Graham toured with the Black Eyed Peas as an opening act.

Kat Graham Road To is on Awesomeness TV, which also broadcasts programs from teen singing impresario Greyson Chance and pop quartet Mindless Behavior.
