Actor Misha Collins on playing the angel Castiel on the CW Network’s long-running paranormal drama “Supernatural”
In his time playing the angel Castiel on the CW Network’s long-running paranormal drama “Supernatural,” actor Misha Collins has battled homicidal demons, yanked mortals out of hell and discovered the liberating joys of alcohol, pot and insanity. All while wearing his standard uniform of dress shirt, slacks, tie and trench coat.

But nothing quite prepared the 37-year-old actor for the otherworldly adventure that is Comic-Con. From thousands of loudly affectionate fans to one silver-haired San Diego politician, here is what Collins remembers from his multiple Comic-Con appearances on behalf of “Supernatural.” He and the cast will be returning to the convention on Sunday for an 11:15 a.m. panel in the mega-sized Hall H. Let the screaming start now.

On the super ego-boosting powerof the show’s fans: “I remember having thousands of people (at the panels) hanging on our every word,” Collins said via email. “It’s nice. It makes you feel important, even if you are not.”

On doing lunch, Con style: “I was coming out of a restaurant and I got caught in a stampede of zombies. Normally this wouldn’t have fazed me, but that day I was unprepared and had no zombie-slaying weapons on me, so I was utterly defenseless.”

Who loves you, angel baby?: “Last year I was going out for dinner on Saturday night and there were already throngs of people queued up for our Sunday-morning panel — more than 12 hours in advance. I would describe the ‘Supernatural’ Comic-Con fans as patient, devoted and insane.”

When Misha met Jerry: Every Comic-Con attendee has a celebrity-sighting story. Collins’ is not as exotic as you’d think, but for a guy who spends his days surrounded by dagger-wielding demon-hunters and flesh-eating monsters, a Jerry Sanders moment might have felt pretty special.
My favorite celebrity sighting at Comic-Con was the mayor of San Diego,” Collins said. “I tousled his wispy silver hair.”

Amazingly, Mayor Sanders has no recollection of this encounter. But that doesn’t mean something like it didn’t happen.

“He might have confused Mayor Sanders with George Clooney,” mayoral spokesman Alex Roth said in an email that might have been a wee bit in jest. “The mayor gets that a lot.”
