Supernatural season 7 continues this week with episode 21, “Reading Is Fundamental,” which will feature Castiel waking up in the psychiatric ward. What will his mental state be like? That’s what the Winchesters are worried about, and it looks like they may be right to be.

As the promo for this episode shows, Castiel is up, but he may not be all there. The archangels are back, and this time, it’s all about this new prophet. One of them is even going to slap Castiel. It’s not looking like things are going so well for Cas, but what will he be like by the end of the episode? He’s going to be around in the season finale, “Survival of the Fittest,” while Sam and Dean go after Dick Roman. Will he be back to the Castiel he used to be by then?
The Supernatural season 7 episode 21 sneak peek from “Reading Is Fundamental” (below) shows Sam and Dean headed to visit Castiel. They’re not quite sure what they’re going to find, and Dean says, “It’s not going to be pretty.” When an orderly stops them, Meg says she’s been expecting them. The fact that she’s been working there to keep an eye on Cas makes things so much easier right now. Castiel greets them by name, and things seem as normal as they could expect, but that changes after Dean comments he’s walking and talking. That’s when Castiel tells Dean to pull his finger and repeats it to the confused Dean. He does, and the lights shatter. Castiel laughs.
Things are different, and it looks like Sam and Dean don’t quite know what to make of Castiel’s behavior. Can you blame them? This is not what they were expecting. What else is Castiel going to do? Is Castiel going to continue to do things like this, and that’s why the “Reading Is Fundamental” promo shows Dean pushing the board game Sorry off the table? It’s not too surprising that things have obviously changed for Castiel. He has a lot in his head right now, as Sam and Dean discuss in the beginning of the clip. Sam wonders if “he remembers it all,” and Dean replies, “That, and I’m guessing whatever kind of hell baggage he lifted off of your plate.”
