Supernatural season 7 continues with episode 12, “Time After Time,” and it begins with Sam and Dean splitting up to follow a man, and Sam getting there in time to see Dean and the man vanish in a red light.

Two Days Earlier

Though Sam would rather Dean’s looking at anime for once, Dean’s still looking into Dick. Jodie calls with a case: two bodies have turned up mummified in Canton, Ohio. They find a house to squat in, and Sam wins rock-paper-scissors for the one bedroom. Their witness tells them he saw a man in fedora strangling his neighbor and a red energy passing between them before his neighbor aged rapidly.

Apparently, this area is a hotspot for weird dead bodies over the years, always in threes. Thanks to a tutorial from Frank, Dean hacks into the local security cameras and they get a photo of the guy they’re looking for. He’s also in photos from the past. They find out his name (Snyder) address from a woman who found one of the bodies, and that’s when they follow him and Dean disappears.

Dean follows Snyder out of an alley, holding his gun, and gets arrested. Though he tries saying he’s from the bureau, the officer points out his badge was issued 68 years in the future. After doing the math, Dean realizes he’s in 1944. A man takes over and asks what really happened, wanting to know more about the red light. Dean realizes he’s a hunter, and Eliot Ness introduces himself.

Sam’s looking at everything they have on the case when Jodie calls and offers her help. Dean’s vocal about his excitement about meeting Ness, and you expect nothing less. Ness shows Dean the files he has put together and when he tells him he’s coming with him, Dean asks if he’s an Untouchable now. Oh, Dean. Ness takes him to Ezra, who seems to be his Bobby (complete with “idjits”), and gets him some new clothes.

Jodie brings boxes from Bobby’s storage locker, and in a picture of Snyder, Sam spots the ring on his finger. The symbol is the infinite hourglass, the mark of Chronos, the God of Time. It’s likely he’s killing people for his “time juice.” While Sam and Jodie need to figure out how to summon a god, Ness has Ezra look into how to kill one. He and Dean go to check out Chronos’ house, and once there, Dean finds records of him betting on races he knows the outcomes of. That leads them to the bookie, Lester, whom Dean punches when he refuses to talk. Ness does get him to talk, and Lester directs them to his usual hangout.

Jodie finds a spell to summon Chronos to get him to tell a person’s future, but they need to summon him at the exact time his hands are on Dean, or he’ll be stuck in 1944 forever. When Jodie finds alcohol from Rufus to Bobby, she suggests they drink it because that’s what he would’ve wanted. While spying on Chronos, Dean asks Ness who died in his life to get him into hunting. No one did; vampires started killing, and he got the bug. When Ness asks him why he hunts, Dean says it used to be because it’s the family business, but he’s not so sure anymore. Ness points out that everyone loses people and one day, your number’s up. He advises Dean to enjoy it while it lasts because hunting’s the only clarity he’ll find in life. After spotting Chronos follow a woman down an alley, they arm themselves from Ness’ trunk and follow but see the two kissing.

Finding a way back on Supernatural

Lila owns the house, and Ness sends Dean back to Ezra while he keeps watch. Ezra has found the weapon they need to stab in Chronos’ heart and tells him there are many ways to pass the time before kissing him “for luck.” Dean spots the mail and uses Back to the Future 3 to figure out his next move. Though Chronos does attack Ness, he’s distracted by Lila calling to him, and when he looks back, Ness is gone. He tells Lila to pack and he’ll explain later. Meanwhile, Dean lies his way into the house they’re squatting in and takes out his knife to carve into the bedroom wall.

When Jodie forces Sam to go upstairs to sleep, he sees his name carved across the room from his head and finds Dean’s note under the paneling. With it, they know the date they need, and thanks to a clue about Lila, they find her and find out the clocks stopped at 11:34 as Chronos strangled Dean.

Dean picks Lila’s front door lock, but once inside, Chronos tackles him. However, Ness has Lila. While Sam and Jodie set up the summoning spell, Chronos tries to argue he’s the opposite of a monster. He calls the people he’s killed sacrifices and says he does it for Lila. He loves her. However, Lila also calls him a monster, and that’s when Dean attacks. Though Ness shoots Chronos, he begins choking Dean. Sam says the spell, and Ness throws Dean the weapon as they’re sent through time.

While Jodie checks on Dean, Sam tries to fight Chronos, and when he focuses on Dean, Sam stabs Chronos in the heart. Before dying, Chronos asks if he wants to know his future and looks between the brothers: “It’s covered in thick black ooze. It’s everywhere. They’re everywhere. Enjoy oblivion.”
